What Kinds of Sports Injuries Can Affect the Feet and Ankles?

Your feet and ankles are used in just about every sport and athletic activity. Injuries can occur from overuse, strain, jumping, twisting, and repetitive impact. This can lead to issues ranging from fractures, sprains, strains, contusions, and possibly nerve damage. Patients with degenerative diseases such as arthritis, circulation issues, or neuropathy may be more prone to certain injuries as well.

How Are Sports Injuries Diagnosed and Treated?

We typically begin with a thorough physical examination to help identify the cause of pain or other symptoms. We also include diagnostic imaging especially when fracture or other complex issues are suspected. Once diagnosed we determine whether treatment is best through conservative means or surgical. Conservative means consist of casting, splinting, injections, taping, orthotics, bracing, and/or physical therapy. For surgery we typically pursue as minimally invasive means as possible whether through arthroscopy or small incisions to stabilize and repair ligaments, joints, and bones.
